Online Benchmark Running Records

Now expanded to a three-part benchmark assessment

An online running record is a time-saving method of assessing a student's reading performance using a recorded passage the student sends to your "In Basket." Use Running Record assessments to:

  • Place students at the appropriate reading level.
  • Determine students' readiness to advance to the next level after they complete assignments.
  • Monitor student reading progress over time.

When used in conjunction with a recorded Retelling and a multiple-choice Comprehension Quiz, running record reading passages and books provide teachers with a more complete picture of their students' reading abilities and better monitors students' progress.

Assigning a Running Record

Click on the "Assignments" tab at the top of the screen. Next click on the "Assessment" tab. Choose Assign a Running Record. To complete the assignment, follow the three steps below.

Step 1
Select a student from the drop down menu.
The menu displays your student roster.

Step 2
Select the reading level you want to assess.

Step 3
Select the book or passage you want to assign.
(A recorded Retelling and Comprehension Quiz are automatically assigned for the passage or book you select.)

The next time the student logs into Raz-Kids.com they will go directly to the assigned benchmark running record.

Note: You will only be able to assign one running record assessment per student at a given time.

Scoring a Running Record

  • Click on "In Basket" at the top of the screen. In the Running Records tab click on "Review" for the recording you wish to review.
  • While listening to the recording of your student, indicate a mistake by clicking the text at the point of an error and selecting the types of error from the drop down menu.
  • You can select more than one error by clicking on the word again and indicating a second error.
The recording will pause while you are selecting an error type. Once an error is selected the recording will resume at a point slightly before the error.

The Running Record Scorecard

Scorecard formulas are automatically calculated based on recording length and errors you have marked.

Error Rate

Expressed as a ratio using the following formula: total words / total errors

For example, 1:12 means that for every error made, the student reads approximately 12 words correctly.

Self-Correction Rate

Expressed as a ratio using the following formula: (total errors + total self corrections) / total self corrections

For example, 1:4 means that the student corrects approximately 1 out of every 4 errors.

A rate of 1:4 or less indicates that the student is self-monitoring his or her reading.

Accuracy Rate

Expressed as a percentage using the following formula: (total words - total errors) / total words * 100

95 - 100% = Easy enough for independent reading.

90 - 94% = Instructional level for guided reading.

below 90% = Too difficult and will frustrate the reader1.

Words Per Minute

60 / (recording time) * (total words)

Words Correct Per Minute

60 / (recording time) * (total words correct)

Scoring Tip 1
Change the Start Word and End Word of the section of text you'd like to assess by grabbing the box border and dragging it to the desired word.

Scoring Tip 2
Ensure the Words Per Minute and Words Correct Per Minute are accurate by adjusting the start and end time of the recording. Click and drag the green or red arrow in the recording timeline to eliminate a pause when the student begins reading or cut a recording short.

1Some teachers may choose to instruct students at a level in which they have scored lower than 90 percent, but generally will not instruct using texts in which students score below 85 percent.
